Diese Woche freuen wir uns sehr, euch unsere neue Kuratorin Monica Gonzales-Marquez (@aeryn_thrace) vorzustellen! Monica ist zur Zeit Gastwissenschaftlerin am Institut für Psychologie der RWTH Aachen. Ursprünglich hat sie Linguistik studiert, sich aber dann für eine wissenschaftliche Karriere in den Kognitionswissenschaften entschieden. Da sie Deutsch zwar gut versteht, aber sich beim Schreiben doch auf Englisch leichter tut, bekommt sie diese Woche Unterstützung von ihrer Kollegin Andrea Philipp. Aus dem gleichen Grund hat Monica unsere Fragen auf Englisch beantwortet*.

Wie bist du in der Wissenschaft gelandet?
Did undergrad in linguistics but wanted evidence, not just theory, so I switched to cognitive science.

Warum hast du dich für dein aktuelles Feld entschieden, und/oder was hält dich dort?
Open science is a social imperative. There are many inequities in science that must be remedied. Helping any way I can is my goal. Teaching to read science, a skill that is largely ignored by universities the world over, is one way I can do this.

Erzähle uns etwas über deine Arbeit!
Our work focuses on teaching to read science. Most students are never taught how to read papers, and it shows. We use a theory called cognitive narrative to help learners understand the relationship between the science that was done, and the science that was documented.

Motivation: warum sollte sich die Öffentlichkeit für deine Forschung/Arbeit interessieren?
It is part of the German constitution that all citizens should be active participants in civic life. Science is a cornerstone of modern society, yet most citizens are functionally science illiterate. Our work is intended to help remedy this problem.

Hast du irgendwelche interessanten externen/zusätzlichen Aufgaben/Tätigkeiten?
I also work on a project called the Meta-Data Inventory whose goal is to create a global, searchable, open-access data-base of exhaustive scientific knowledge, much like we see on Star Trek. I also head the Empirical Methods in Cognitive Linguistics workshop. These workshop focus on teaching research methods in cognitive science in an intensive, hands-on, collaborative, open science setting.

Irgendwelche interessanten Hobbies, von denen du uns erzählen möchtest?

Raising my child, cooking, walking, science fiction in all forms, and meeting different kinds of people.

Wie sieht dein idealer freier Tag aus?
Packing a picnic and getting on a random bus or a train with my kid to have an adventure, destination unknown.
